SPIDER WOMAN
Shoe strings, thread, felt, hand-dyed wool yarn, metal, gourds, & mixed media
2022
Webs and the myth of the spider woman has existed across myriad different cultures for millennia. From the tale of the Greek spider woman, Arachne, whose overconfidence of her skill in weaving led to her tragic downfall to the stories across Asia, Europe, Egypt, and the Native Americans of a mother that protects. The spider is a symbol of the ability to weave and to create something from one's own body, just as a spider makes silk. I am interested in how this ancient tale can correspond with today and the modern age.
